A brand new coat (of paint)

We moved into our current house a little over 5 years ago. Time sure has flown by! The house was built sometime between 1889 and 1895 (I haven't been able to pinpoint the exact year yet). Basically, it's a really old house! Luckily all of the previous owners (or at least the ones in the last four or five decades) took really good care of it. It's bones are still sturdy and it has a lot of unique features.

One of the things I fell in love with when we first looked at the home was the front entry & stairway. It's tall, airy and has a cool arch over part of it. I had never seen an arch like this in a home before:

I also fell in love with staircase (three sets of stairs w/two landings) and the old windows & window seat. Here are some photos I took of the stairway the very first time we looked at the house:

The wallpaper was beige with cream stripes running vertically. It was 'fine' but was getting kind of grungy & starting to peel in lots of places. When we bought the house we knew that someday we'd want to remove it.

The wallpaper also carried into the upstairs hallway:

So.....five years later we had the wallpaper removed! Although we like to attempt doing home-y things ourselves, we decided to hire a painting contractor to do it for us. It cost a bit more money to hire it out BUT it saved us our sanity, which made it worth it :) With the kids keeping me 100% occupied during the week and with us wanting to enjoy our weekends as a family, it would have taken us forever just to remove the wallpaper! Plus, with the paper being 2 1/2 stories high, I'm pretty sure Matt or I would have ended up in the hospital at some point it time...

It took two weeks for two guys to removed the wallpaper, remove the layer of paste (which turned out to be an old clay-type paste), fix the plaster wherever it needed fixing, prime the ceilings and walls, and then add two layers of paint.

It was a bit frustrating at times whenever I wanted to go upstairs with the kiddos during the day (with drop cloths & paints & stuff everywhere). And we had to skip naps for a few days because I didn't want the kids in their bedrooms along with paint fumes. But we made do.

Also -- picking out the paint colors was so hard! I wanted to do some funky colors (that's my artist brain talking) but I promised Matt I wouldn't go too crazy. Also, since the carpeting is a dark navy blue (not our style, but we're keeping it for a while yet) we had to pick some colors that 'go' with the carpeting.

Why are we keeping the dark navy carpeting you ask? a) Liam is up and down the stairs all day long, and Chloe is attempting to crawl up them now, so we feel the carpeting is much safer. If we remove the carpet and the wood's exposed, we're afraid the kids will be slipping and sliding all over the place. b) Our crazy annoying and spoiled cats are not declawed and pretty much destroy anything soft in our house. I cannot imagine putting new carpeting in and having the cats decimate the carpets the first day we have it. So....the carpet stays for now. It's not our style, but it's fine for now :)

Or maybe we should get rid of the cats instead...
Oops, did I say that out loud?

Here are some before and after photos of the project. The "befores" are actually during the wallpaper/paste removal process and the "afters" are the finished product:

Landing at the top of the stairs

On the left side -- this is the original wall color. If it had not been patched over the years we would have seriously
considered keeping it the raw color. But there was just too much patchwork over the years.

Part of our front entry.

Tons of wall space.

FYI-

The local painting contractor we used was Schoen's Painting and Decorating. We would highly recommend them to anyone looking for a painter. They were friendly, professional, tidy and reasonable. Thanks Phil, Jake and Chris for helping us restore part of our home for years to come!

And here are the paint colors we used:

Bottom half of chair rail and front entry: Sherwin-Williams Balanced Beige
Upper walls and hallway walls: Sherwin-Williams Pewter Tray (at 75%)
Ceiling: Sherwin-Williams Extra White in Matte
Crown, base and trim: Sherwin-Williams Extra White in Semi Gloss

What lies beneath

In an attempt to make more room for our Christmas tree in the living room I had Matt move the couch a bit. This is what I found underneath it:

Can you tell we have kids?

Clearly we do not look under our couch very often. Based on the fact that I found a Valentine's Day heart decoration -- that means it's been at least since February that we've last looked underneath.

And do you see anything non-kid related?

There's not even a cat toy. Or one of my hair ties. Or one of Matt's stale Tostitos. The only even slightly-adult thing is two dimes. Twenty cents. Not even enough $ for a large gum ball.

Some other observations I made:

- We obviously don't play cards often -- otherwise I think we would have noticed the missing card by now...

- And it's been even longer since we've played 'Drinking Jenga.' Like a wayyyyy long time ago. I guarantee that the Jenga block was being used by Liam to build a castle or spaceship. Definitely not by Matt & I to purposely get wasted.

- Can you say major choking hazards?? It's a good thing we looked under here before Chloe crammed her tiny little arms under there and started swiping stuff out.

- Lastly, I'm surprised by the lack of crusty food and/or centipedes and/or other gross things usually found under couches. Although I'm sure I'll run into some of those when I look underneath the couch cushions tomorrow one of these months.

Welcome to the world, Chloe!

CHLOE ~ Blooming
ELISE ~ God is my oath

Chloe's Zodiac sign is Aries. People born specifically on April 9th are perceived to be a fine balance of fun and commonsense, have a charismatic insightful nature that is good at compromising, artistic and eloquent with a forward looking attitude and have a concern for the welfare of others. (sounds great to me!!)

Chloe Elise was born on Wednesday, April 9th at 1:05 in the morning.
She weighed in at 6 pounds and 13 ounces. She is 20 inches long.

Her due date was April 22nd, but she arrived two weeks earlier than expected. I developed high blood pressure during my last few weeks of pregnancy. I did not develop preeclampsia, but my doctor was worried that my raised BP could result in it. I was admitted to the hospital the Thursday prior to Chloe's arrival so they could monitor my BP. I was sent home and put on "light bed rest" until a follow-up appointment the following Tuesday. At the follow-up appointment my BP was still a big concern, so my doctor decided to induce labor that afternoon. Matt and I headed home from the clinic, packed our bags, gave Liam snuggles and then headed to the hospital. Both my mom and Matt's mom watched Liam while we were at the hospital.

My labor was induced around 4:00 pm on Tuesday evening. Chloe was born 9 hours later, bright and early in the morning! She was born naturally and she cried immediately. We didn't know if we were going to have a boy or a girl, so we were amazed when the doctor yelled out "it's a girl!" When they put her in my arms she opened her eyes and stared at me. We were relieved that she was born healthy and happy. Matt was there supporting me the entire time (as well as a visit from my mom) and the nurses that helped out during delivery were awesome. Overall the experience was pretty amazing (despite the pain and recovery).

We brought Chloe home on Friday the 11th. The grandmas were relieved of their babysitting duties and Matt, Liam, Chloe, the cats and I settled into our new groove at home. We had limited visitors that Saturday and Sunday. We took a few "family car rides" along the lakefront, rented some movies (the 4 of us piled on the couch together), enjoyed some meals that were dropped off by friends and neighbors (thank you Meal Train!) and pushed through some sleepless nights of nursing/diaper changes/crying that weekend.

Of course I had my crazy crying spells the first week. Oh my goodness, I was crying constantly, about everything. I'd wake up crying, cry while eating breakfast, cry while nursing Chloe, cry while hugging Liam, cry while folding laundry. I couldn't help it. I had no control over it. This worried me a lot because I dealt with postpartum depression after Liam was born. But the crying jags have mellowed out now (I cried once today and I'm only 3 weeks postpartum) and I think I'm going to be okay this time around! But I'm definitely aware of the feelings/emotions/seriousness of PPD and am trying hard to stay positive and just be the best mom I can be to Liam and Chloe :)

I've learned a lot in the last few weeks about what it is to be a mom to two kids now! I've been jotting down random thoughts and will share those with you at a later date. But until then....here are a few photos of Chloe from when she was born and shortly after we brought her home:

My friend Sarah took this photo of us at the hospital
(check out Sarah's photography at www.sarahdohertyphotography.com)

Liam meeting his sister for the first time...

Chloe's first time in the car seat, ready to go home from the hospital...

Liam welcomed us home with this sign...

Chloe relaxing in her lounger...

I love these little fingers...

This is my favorite photo thus far! Liam has been a great big brother and this photo shows the love he already has for her...

Chloe on Easter Sunday...

More "brother love" for Chloe...

Siblings...

Family and friends have been so generous, sending flowers and cookies and bringing us hot meals.  And both Chloe and Liam have received some cool gifts. I must say, it's been pretty fun opening gifts that are all pink and frilly and girlie :)

And this is what tired (and very happy) parents, a toddler and a baby look like.
Is there a way to photo shop out under-eye bags? Ha ha!

I love blogs

I'll admit it. I'm a bit of a blog stalker. When I come across a blog that I really like, I follow it on a weekly (sometimes daily) basis. Some of the blogs I follow are mommy/family blogs, some are home decorating blogs and some are foodie blogs. Some are funny and some are inspiring. No matter what the blog topic may be, there are certain ones that just stand out to me and I really enjoy them.

After all....the reason I started my own blog was because I felt inspired by some of the blogs I currently follow. I thought it was interesting to get a glimpse into other mothers' lives, into other peoples' homes (a little creepy, I know) and check out new recipes and home decorating ideas.

The blogs that I enjoy have definitely changed over time. Sometimes I lose interest in one and decide not to read it anymore. And sometimes I come across a brand new blog to follow, one that I wish I had found years ago.

I thought I'd share my current favorite blogs. The ones that I stalk! I think they're worth sharing because A) they are sources of creativity and inspiration and connection (a connection to other moms and families) and B) I just think it's nice to spread the word about fellow bloggers! If I can help other bloggers get some more followers, then that puts a smile on my face and theirs :)

None of these bloggers asked me to list their blog here or give opinions. All opinions are totally my own.

So here it goes...

Here are my current favorite mom & family blogs...

Mom to FIVE children and photographer, Ashley Ann blogs about life, family, creativity and photography. Her family is beautiful, her writing is inspiring and her photography is simply amazing.

Mom to three adorable children, blogger Amy shares snippets of her family and home. I like her style and she has a seriously contagious smile!

I follow this blog the most! Blogger Katie is a mom to two boys with another boy due any day! She is full of creativity, constantly doing cool stuff to her home and isn't afraid to try new things. She's funny, honest and has made a beautiful home for her and her family.

I just discovered this blog within the last few weeks and I fell in love. It's just funny. Blogger Teri posts a lot of random things about babies and pregnancy and life that are of interest and use to me. As a mom myself, it makes me feel like I am not alone!

I've been following this blog for a few years now. Blogger Sara is the real reason I started my own blog! I've just found so much inspiration over the years while reading her blog. She's full of life and love and isn't afraid to share anything. Her photography is cool, her three girls are beautiful and she always has something interesting to share. A true nesting gypsy she is.

Mom to an adorable little boy, blogger Jessica is one of the most honest bloggers out there.
She is a "hopeless encourager" as she calls herself. Her and her little boy are always on a mission to make others' people days and she shares the stories on her blog. This woman is honest, cool and creative. She also has an Etsy page where she sells some cool crocheted goods

A mom of two, Amy is funny and honest. This is another pregnancy/mom site that reassures me that I am not alone!

Here are some of my current favorite home decorating blogs...

I like Kelly's style. She gives great vintage decorating tips & also posts a lot of "home tours" which let you see inside other peoples' cool, eclectic homes. I consider my decorating style to be a bit "eclectic" which is why I was drawn to her blog.

Look at the title of this blog. Need I say more? I am obsessed with the color turquoise (and teals and blues and greens) so looking at this blog is about equal to eating a Snickers bar to me! Blogger Erin posts photos of amazing turquoise-inspired homes almost every day. Eye candy.

This is a cool creative living site by blogger Holly. Food and flowers and home ideas, oh my! Her topics and ideas are fun and fresh. She keeps me in the loop with what's "cool" at the moment :)

If you're looking for remodeling or crafting ideas, this is a great resource. Blogger Cassity shares great do-it-yourself projects that are actually doable!

Another nice do-it-yourself kind of blog. Krista shares great tips on how to make your house happy :)

Some of my favorite creative blogs...

Mom and blogger Sarah takes you inside her home and shares bits of her family life and her fresh, simple style.

I wish I were friends with this girl! Blogger Natalie shares stories of her family & home and is full of creative inspiration (she has an Etsy shop). Her blog is filled with beautiful photos and it encourages me to want to live more simply.

I came across Sarah's blog when my Crafty Club re-created one of her crafts (an eggs-in-a-nest necklace which she sells on her Etsy page). She has a beautiful family and posts the most incredible photos on her blog.

And my current favorite foodie blogs...

I just love the recipes that blogger Sarah posts. I've tried numerous recipes from her blog and they've all been successful.

Blogger Nikki posts super yummy recipes, but also posts about random other things (life, fashion, trends) that I also find interesting.

I recently started following this blog. Bloggers Teri and Jenny share great recipes and the photographs are funky & fresh to look at.

I hope you enjoy at least one of the blogs as much as I do. As I said earlier, I love to check out (and stalk) new blogs! So please tell me, what are your favorite lifestyle/food/home/mommy blogs? I would love to hear from you.  Please share with me by commenting in the "Post A Comment" spot below!
