Vintage chart = cool art

My mother-in-law brought this little basket of vintage cook books over to our house last week. She found them at Matt's grandma's house and knew we'd be interested in looking through them.

The colors that were used to print these old books were so cool!
I love the reds and greens and yellows. The fonts. The simple-ness of it all.

And oh my goodness -- who knew there was an entire cookbook devoted to Jell-O!?

And an entire cookbook devoted to recipes with honey :)

I pulled this gem out of the bunch and just KNEW that it had to find a home in our kitchen...

...it's an old-school Ball Ready Reference Chart and I just love how it looks.

I will never have an excuse for not knowing how many pounds of squash it takes to make 16-20 quarts of canned squash (40 pounds of squash, in case you care to know).

I picked up a white frame at Target (during my weekly diaper run with the kids) for $2.99.

Obviously there are no pre-made 6 3/4 inch x 9 1/4 inch frames out there, so I bought an 8x10 and attached the chart to a piece of green card stock I had laying around.

I tested the final piece out in a few places in our kitchen...
On an open shelf by my mixing bowls... (those are Matt's dilly beans on the right side!)

On a window ledge, appropriately near some antique Ball canning jars...

And on another open shelf in our kitchen, near the cookbooks and vintage scale.

Knowing me, I'll probably move it around a couple dozen times before I decide where I like it.

Please leave a comment below and let me know which spot you like best (if you care)!

A balancing act

I've been totally slacking in the taking-photos-of-the-kiddos Department. Life has been so busy.

We've been doing lots of fun stuff. In the past few weeks we've:
Attended two weddings.
Taken a trip to our cabin.
Spent a day at the zoo.
Enjoyed Bookworm Gardens twice.
Have been harvesting tomatoes from our garden.
Matt's been canning dilly beans and making homemade salsa.
Liam has done countless experiments with paint & glitter glue & play dough.
We've taken trips to the farmer's market.
Started potty training Liam.
Started giving Chloe cereal.

But it's really the daily to-do list that's been keeping us busy:
It's the laundry.
And the dishes.
And the constant layer of crumbs and stickiness on the kitchen floor.
The picking up of toys & socks & books & random everything.
The mowing of the law, de-weeding the garden, watering the flowers, etc.
Paying bills and getting rid of piles of junk mail.
Keeping the refrigerator stocked and the diaper baskets full.
Hosting friends and family at our house.
Double bath times. Double story times. Double put-downs-to-bed.

I've been struggling during the day with how to manage the routine stuff while also making time for fun and caring for two little kids. As soon as I think I've figured it all out, something changes or goes haywire. Luckily, when Matt's done with work for the day, he's an enormous help! When he's with the kids and I things are so much easier.

We have 2 kids and I get stressed out. My Grandma Bieniek had 8 kids and my Grandma Judnic had 9 kids!! HOW DID THEY DO IT ALL?

I've been super complain-y and crabby lately (I'm so sorry Matt) but I truly feel blessed to be busy and tired and surrounded by chaos sometimes. I would rather be busy than bored!

And so we truck on...
...trying to find a balance between fun and the day-to-day....

A few photos of things that have made me smile in the past few weeks:

This little sweetie keeps me smiling...

Liam loving the outdoors at our cabin...

 Kitchen chaos.

At the zoo. Chloe's first train ride.

Afternoon snuggling with my peanut...

My nephew's 3rd birthday party...

Liam at the park

And last but not least...
(we're trying the "naked" potty training technique)

Summertime is awesome

I've been pretty busy for the last couple of weeks -- preparing for our yard sale, taking Liam to swimming lessons twice a week, having family at our home, nursing Chloe 6 times a day, and now packing for a trip to the cabin -- so I didn't have time to post some Weekly Smiles photos. Here they are:
Liam loving his swimming lessons.

Liam being interested in soccer (after watching the World Cup on TV with Matt). We took a
trip to the toy store just to buy a soccer ball for the little man.

Matt being Super Dad.

Seeing Bruno Mars in concert with some girlfriends.

Stumbling upon some cool art under a bridge while out for a walk with the kids.

The weather finally being nice enough that I can breastfeed Chloe el fresco

Chloe loving the outdoors so much that it puts her to sleep :)
Asleep on our deck.

Framed paintings in our kitchen from our budding artist, Liam.

Before & After: Our New Kitchen Back Splash

This is where we do dishes...

Our home is around 120 years old. When we moved into our house 4 1/2 years ago the kitchen was the one room that we said we'd like to re-do eventually. It was very functional the way it was (great appliances, plenty of storage space, heated floors, under cabinet lighting, etc.) but it just wasn't our style. It had orange textured ceramic floor tiles, late 80's-esk cupboards and counter tops and a Spanish-style back splash. It definitely did not mesh well with the style of a 120-year old house.

So around 2 1/2 years ago Matt & I took the plunge and started remodeling the kitchen! Matt & I and some family & friends did all of the demolition. We saved the appliances because they were totally fine and donated the cabinetry to our local Restore. We did all of the wall and trim painting ourselves. My uncle added more lighting in the ceiling and installed new cupboards. We splurged on custom granite counter tops from a place in Milwaukee and hired a local carpenter to install a new wood floor and legs on the kitchen island. Matt and his uncle installed new floor & window trim and window ledges. We hired another local carpenter to make custom open shelving in two areas. As for the decorating, that has been a long process done by me. Some day I will show photos of the rest of the kitchen....

We finally got a new tile back splash installed last week. It's amazing how different the kitchen looks with a new back splash! It really pulls all of the elements of the room together and finishes it nicely.

We picked out a really simple, small subway tile. Our cabinetry and flooring is quite simple, yet our granite counter top is detailed, so we wanted something simple that wouldn't take away from the beauty of the granite. And we got the tile on super sale at Menards which makes it even sweeter!

Here are some before photos of our back splash area, without tile:

And here are photos of our new tiled back splash:

The grout we chose is called "Mushroom."

I'd like the say the kitchen is officially done....but nothing is ever "done" when it involves me! I still want to find some nice rugs for by the sink/stove and entryways. And I'm still on the lookout for new chairs for the kitchen table. But those are minor things. The structural/functional aspects of the kitchen are officially done :)

Thanks for letting me share :)

So many buttons

October's Crafty Club was held at Stephanie's home last Wednesday. There are SO many awesome Halloween and Fall craft ideas out there this time of the year, so what a wonderful month to host a craft!

Stephanie was a great host. She picked out a fun craft and made some delicious desserts that we all enjoyed thoroughly :)

The craft of choice was Button Pumpkins. She found the idea on Pinterest here.

I took a few quick photos on my iPhone:

Getting our drinks...I mean hot glue guns...ready.

S bought old frames at a thrift store. Then she primed and painted them white. We had the option of "shabby chic-ing" the frames with sandpaper if we wanted. I chose to do it and I love how it turned out.

The ladies intently gluing on the buttons.

We cut out the shape of a pumpkin from orange scrap booking paper, then glued on the buttons.

S found jars of orange buttons at a local craft store.

Obviously I'm not consuming alcohol right now, because I'm preggers, but I DID pour myself a cold Amber O'Douls.

Here's my finished pumpkin. I layered the buttons to give it more depth.

We attached a dark gray piece of scrap booking paper behind the frame. Here you can see how I gave my frame a nice "worn" look :)

Then we placed the pumpkin in the frame.

Then I added a green stem (a doorknob that S painted) and some curly cues (made from floral wire wrapped around a marker).

Finishing up our masterpieces.

 All done!

My finished pumpkin. I set it on a photo stand and have it on my kitchen island.

And here is a photo of my friend Joy's pumpkin. She placed it on a shelf in her living room.

Every year when I decorate for Fall I'll see this craft and remember the great time I had with my crafty ladies :)

Do you have any cool Fall or Halloween crafts in the works? I'd love to hear about them

Two done, two to go

I finished making curtains for two of our kitchen windows. Thank you, Grandma and Mom, for your help! I have yet to make the valances for the other two kitchen windows, but I'm just glad that I finished ANY.

I also wrapped one of our window seats in some new fabric. This window seat is located on the way up our stairs, on one of the landings. It's one of Jack and Marlee's favorite spots to sleep during the day. Hello cat fur.

I took Liam's 11-month photo this morning. It's two weeks late, but it's better late than never! This little sweetie pie just makes my heart melt every day :)

He was pretty serious today...
...until he stuck his tongue out!

Have a great rest of the week!
