Spring is happening

A telltale sign that spring/summer is finally here in Wisconsin? Most of this past week's activities took place outside! Here are some things that brought a smile to my face this week....

Food truck night. I love that the food trucks are only a few blocks from
our house every Monday evening.

The lake. I never get sick of walking by the lake. Or as Liam calls it, "the ocean."

Drinks with my girlfriends. Empty margarita glasses. Mission accomplished!

Liam loving his sister.

Lilacs in our yard.

Liam sporting his new sunglasses.

My grandma holding Chloe.

 My mom holding Chloe.

A bowl of much-needed ice cream. (my butt disagrees)

A family stroll around the neighborhood.

A (finally) completed stack of Chloe's birth announcements & thank yous.

Have a peaceful week :)

As the months go by

One of my favorite gifts I received this Christmas was from my sister-in-law Nici. She made me a perpetual calendar journal! Have you seen these calendar journals before? I've seen them on Pinterest and thought it was a really cool idea. They come in all different types of shapes and designs, such as:
From the Design Sponge blog
From the Joy Ever After blog
From the Lucy's Lampshade blog

This is how they work: At the end of each day you write a short tidbit about something that happened on that day (a meal that you cooked, a birthday you celebrated, a new park you explored, or just a thought that you wanted to write down). Then you place the card to the back of the stack and there's a fresh card to write on the next day. Each year you add something to the appropriately dated index card, so as the years go on you can look back and see what you did exactly one year/two years/10 years ago on that day :)

Here's the one that my sis-in-law made for me:

She bought a plain house-shaped recipe card box and told me I can decorate it however I want :)

She stamped a month & day on each index card...

...and then separated the months with Wisconsin themed postcards.

Hello from Wisco!

Here are my first two entries.

I'm so glad Nici gave this to me. I really do enjoy writing down little moments that occur each day. I attempted doing this with the "Daily Smiles" entries that I used to post on this blog, but it got away from me (oops)! So I look forward to, once again, writing down little personal mementos that I'm sure to cherish as the years go by. Thanks Nici!

Does anyone else have one of these? Do you love it? Like it? Dislike it? Please share.

The great outdoors

My nephew took a cool panoramic shot of the lake on my iPhone...
We spent this past weekend, Memorial Day weekend, at our cabin in the great Wisconsin northern woods!

I've been going to our cabin almost every Memorial Day weekend since 1989. The only year my family skipped going to the cabin for MD weekend was seven years ago, when my brother Nate got married to my sister-in-law in Iowa

My parents bought the cabin in 1989 from my mom's uncle. I was only 8 years old when we started spending Memorial Days, summer vacations, 4th of July's and Labor Days at the cabin. And the memories are all fantastic ones.....

....trying to sell rocks from my "rock collection" on the side of the road. Learning how to jump off of the raft. Scooping frogs and turtles off of lily pads with nets. Fishing off the end of the pier. Riding the 4-wheeler in the woods on the trails. Walking through the forest in Autumn while the leaves fall onto your head like raindrops. Laughing and crying around the campfire with my family. Helping my nieces and nephews make s'mores for the first time. Watching bald eagles swoop down and pick fish out of the lake with their feet. Hearing the loons make their calls in the early morning. Ice skating in the wintertime....

I look forward to making many more memories with Liam as he grows up at the cabin :) He already seems to love boat rides, playing near the water and walking through the woods, so I think we're off to a good start.

Here are just a few photos from this past weekend. I apologize for the not-so-great-quality photos, as I took all of these on my iPhone instead of my good camera:

My niece, Caroline, opening gifts on her 13th birthday!

How did she get to be 13 years old already? Wow, I feel old!

Liam picking up anything he can find on the ground (sticks, mud, insects, etc)

Liam ready for a boat ride! Little kid + life jacket = cuteness!

Tornado

Wisconsin's weather has been very bizarre the last few days. It's late January and we're getting rain, thunder, lightning, wind, sleet and snow. One day it's 55 degrees, and the next day it's 9 degrees.

We actually had a small tornado whirl right through our living room this morning!

It took Liam only 15 minutes to accomplish this.

He may have gotten this talent from his mom :)
